GENERAL QUESTIONS

  • Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art and combat sport that focuses on ground fighting and submission holds. It emphasizes technique and leverage over brute strength, making it accessible for all body types and skill levels.

  • There is absolutely no experience or fitness background required. We believe that you do not need to be in shape, to get in shape. Everyone has their own starting point, and we all know the hardest part is getting started which is why our beginner GI class is a perfect starting point for everyone.

  • Yes, BJJ is generally safe when practiced under supervision and with respect for partners. Our instructors prioritize safety and proper technique to minimize the risk of injury. During training, instructors focus on making sure that you are paired with teammates with similar skill levels and are of similar size.

  • No, not at all! Our program is designed for beginners to learn from scratch, regardless of fitness level or athletic background. Our approach supports focusing on technique over strength and makes it accessible to people of all ages and abilities.

  • Yes! We offer a free 3 day trial for new students to experience our training environment and see if BJJ is right for them.

  • Our membership options vary based on frequency and commitment. Contact us directly for detailed information on rates and packages.

  • Wear comfortable athletic clothing, like a t-shirt and shorts, for your first class. We will provide gi (uniform) for trial students. We recommend bringing a pair of sandals or flip flops to easily enter and exit the mat area.

  • For new students, please arrive to class 15-20 minutes early in order to allow time to fill out the waiver and to get fitted for your rental gi.

  • For beginners, 2–3 classes per week is ideal to start seeing improvement in technique and fitness. The frequency can vary based on your goals and availability.

  • Jiu-jitsu helps children develop confidence, discipline, focus, and even builds friendship while improving their strength, coordination, and problem-solving skills. It teaches respect, teamwork, and perseverance—valuable lessons that carry over into school and everyday life.

  • Jiu-Jitsu is a safe and rewarding activity for kids, promoting discipline, respect, and focus while helping improve academic performance and confidence. Classes are always supervised by qualified instructors, and children are paired with partners in their own age group for a safe and positive training experience.

  • If your child feels hesitant, our instructors will work closely with them to build confidence through small, achievable successes. In the early stages, progress comes quickly, allowing students to see their improvement and take pride in their accomplishments. These early wins help even the most reluctant child develop enthusiasm for martial arts.

  • Children who train martial arts are less likely to be bullied and even less likely to become bullies. This helps children handle bullying by building real confidence, self-control, and resilience. Through training, they learn how to stay calm under pressure, set boundaries, and protect themselves safely—often without needing to fight.

  • Our kid's program ranges from 5-13 years old. Our program builds strong fundamentals while gradually introducing more advanced techniques, drills, and sparring. Younger kids (5-7) focus on basics and controlled practice, while older kids (8-14) learn complex sequences, live rolling, and take on more responsibility for their growth and discipline.

  • That’s completely up to you. Your child will be more than safe with us in the meantime but if you would like, you are more than welcome like to sit and watch. We have an accommodating lounge area for guests and parents alike.

  • At String Theory Jiu Jitsu, maintaining a clean and safe environment is our highest priority. Our comprehensive cleaning protocols are designed to ensure that every member feels confident and protected during their training sessions.

  • Yes! We have separate locker rooms and changing areas for men and women, each with showers, so everyone can feel comfortable, safe, and relaxed while getting ready.
